Nexus Content Creator Spotlight: Karmakut

Nexus is a platform where content creators can build their own game store. This enables creators to sell games and earn support by turning a content stream into an income stream, enabling creators to focus more on what they do best: creating!

This week, we’re featuring Karmakut, one of our earliest adopters Nexus and generally one of our favorite people. Karmakut’s Nexus features the tactical games he streams as well as his official merch. So we interviewed him about his Nexus experience to date and for his thoughts on his streaming career thus far.

When did you first start making content, Karmakut?

I started making content at the end of my junior year of college at UHM so I believe it was around 4ish years ago!

What was your tipping point to go from creating content on the side to making it your main focus? Or What was your first “omg, I can do this for real” moment?

I think even before I made a name for myself in Squad, I had already experimented with content creation with Destiny and had garnished a large number of views there, so that proved that it was possible to some extent.

After playing Squad and making content for a while my channel eventually started to pick up and gain traction and that’s when I realized I had a unique opportunity to cover a game that very few were covering and I was already known in that community as the main content creator. So essentially I just saw the potential in my positioning.

What are the top three tools you use and couldn’t live without when it comes to making and/or sharing your content?

I’d say Nexus has been a huge help for the additional revenue streams, Photoshop/Adobe editing products have always been my go-to, and YouTube. Whenever I don’t know how to do something or I want to learn, it's almost the first place I go to teach myself.

What’s your favorite piece of content you’ve created to date?

My favorite piece of content was an incredibly cinematic 1-life event of Squad that to this day has been one of my most proud creations:

How did you pick your handle?

I picked this name when I had to sign up for my very first Batte.net account to play Warcraft III online. I pulled a Yu-Gi-Oh card out of a box that I had next to me and just used that name “Karma Cut.”

What would you say your biggest achievement has been since you started creating content?

My biggest achievement since I started creating content was getting to meet my idols. I remember growing up watching people like Hutch and SeanNanners and other big content creators. Even to this day I’ll meet people like Drewski or PhlyDaily or Hasan or other large content creators and get to meet and talk with them and that’s always blown my mind. I am very grateful and happy to have reached a size where I can interact with these people regularly.

What would be one thing you recommend other content creators avoid when they’re starting up?

Consistency and efficiency. You need to make sure that you love what you’re creating, but that you aren’t spending 80 hours on your first video that’s most likely just going to get under 100 views. Temper your expectations in the beginning, put in a proportionate amount of work, and keep chugging along.

Eventually, you’ll have a good “portfolio” of content and people will see you’ve been making content for a while and things will hopefully catch on.

Also, as everyone says, be yourself and find what makes you unique.
